Nicotine Tests

Concerned about exposure to high levels of second-hand smoke? This can be a worry, particularly for pregnant women, babies and young children as they are especially vulnerable to the health risks associated with passive smoking. Want to monitor is someone has given-up or tken up smoking?

Nicotine Exposure Test

TobacAlert™ is a smoking test that provides you with a quick, accurate determination of a person’s level of exposure to tobacco products including second hand smoke.

This smoking test is an easy to use, fast and accurate urine test strip. It can detect exposure to second hand smoke and the use of cigarettes, pipes, cigars, chewing tobacco.

The passive smoking test measures levels of cotinine, a byproduct of the body’s breakdown of nicotine, the active ingredient found in tobacco products and tobacco smoke. Cotinine is a widely accepted indicator of recent tobacco product use and exposure, including second hand smoke exposure.

Primary Uses of the Nicotine Exposure Test

How the Nicotine Exposure Test works

The end of the TobacAlert™ strip contains gold particles coated with an antibody that selectively binds to cotinine in the urine. After the end of the strip is dipped in urine, the gold particles migrate through specialised “traps” in the strip. The more cotinine bound to a gold particle, the further it is able to migrate along the strip. The reddish bands seen on the developed strip correspond to gold particles caught in a particular trap. TobacAlert™ is extremely sensitive and can measure amounts as low as 6 nanograms of cotinine per millilitre of urine (6 billionths of a gram in one fifth of a teaspoon). The passive smoking test is not intended for medical use.

Smokescreen Nicotine Test

SmokeScreen is a simple-to-use, inexpensive disposable smoking test which can assess smoking levels and and monitor anti-smoking promises.

The test can be used in clinics and doctor's surgeries to provide feedback to patients for them to assess their level of smoking and how well they are cutting down or clearing nicotine from their system. It can also be used at home, work or school to establish if someone is smoking.

The Smokescreen Nicotine Test measures nicotine metabolites and is significantly more reliable than relying on personal accounts of smoking use.

SmokeScreen is a 5 minute colorimetric test which detects nicotine and all its breakdown products, including cotinine, with a positive sample turning a pink/orange colour.
